Analisis Persepsi Masyarakat terhadap Urgensi Konservasi Hutan Mangrove di Gane Barat Kabupatan Halmahera Selatan

Mangrove forests are coastal ecosystems that serve vital ecological, social, and economic functions; however, their existence in Gane Barat District, South Halmahera Regency, faces various threats stemming from land-use activities and low public awareness regarding the importance of conservation. Public perception is a key factor in the success of conservation efforts, as it influences attitudes and participation in preserving the mangrove ecosystem. This study aims to analyze public perception regarding the urgency of mangrove forest conservation in Gane Barat District, South Halmahera Regency. A quantitative approach utilizing a survey method was employed. The results indicate that 57.7% of the community possesses excellent knowledge of mangrove forests. Furthermore, 61.9% of respondents strongly agreed on several points: that damage to the mangrove forests in Gane Barat disrupts the local environmental balance; that mangrove logging harms the ecosystem; that land-use conversion diminishes the benefits mangroves provide to the local community; that trash and waste affect mangrove growth; and that damage requires immediate attention. Additionally, 41.2% of the community strongly agreed, and 30.9% agreed, with conservation policies. In conclusion, while the community in the villages of Doro, Koititi, and Cango demonstrates a high level of knowledge, damage caused by land-use conversion persists and requires immediate remediation supported by government policy to curb future degradation—particularly given the significant benefits mangroves offer, such as protection against coastal abrasion, tidal surges, and tsunamis.
